SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF CONGENITAL MUSCULAR TORTICOLLIS WITH FAMILY HISTORY

Abstract
Congenital muscular torticollis is a disorder characterized by a shortening of at least one of the cervical muscles and tilting of the head to the opposite side. Despite the fact that torticollis has been known for many years and that there have been a great number of reports on the subject, the pathogenesis remains incompletely understood.
A positive family history of congenital muscular torticollis is uncommon and only a small number of cases have been reported till now. We experienced a family that had four of seven members with congenital muscular torticollis. They were corrected by the inferior open tenotomy and the bipolar release and lengthening procedure. In this family, it is suspicious that genetic factors influenced the development of this condition.
